Chef Masatoshi "Gari" Sugio, who owns Sushi of Gari on the Upper East Side, arrived from Tokyo way back in 1978. After working as a chef in several New York restaurants, he opened his own place in 1997. Now he has several restaurants in Manhattan (all under what has become his brand name) and one in Tokyo. Sushi snobs come from all over for Gari's authentic Japanese food and signature sauces.

The interior is cozy and minimally decorated. You can sit at a table or at the square sushi bar in one corner of the room. There are lots of authentic Japanese dishes on the menu to choose from.

We recommend: Anything marked "Gari Signature Sushi." The chef makes his own highly original sauces, which add a special flavor. If you're in the mood for something other than sushi, try "Tuna of Gari."

Cuisine: Japanese

Atmosphere: relaxed

Crowd: locals and fair number of Japanese

FYI: Gourmands should order the omakase-style "Gari's Choice" selection of sushi and sashimi.
