St. Andrew's Anglican Church
A Gothic gem in downtown Moscow
Moscow's only Anglican church was built in the late 19th century. During the revolution, the tower was used as a machine gun nest, and afterwards the Bolsheviks seized valuables and a large sum of money stored here. St. Andrew's was closed in the 1920s. At first, this magnificent Victorian Gothic building was used as a warehouse, then a dormitory, and finally, in the 1960s, as a recording studio on account of its superb acoustics. It was only after a visit from Queen Elizabeth II in the mid-1990 that the building was returned to the Anglican Church, fulfilling a personal promise made by President Boris Yeltsin.
