One of Moscow's most famous museums was opened more than 100 years ago as Moscow State University's Museum of Fine Arts, and it's seen many changes since then. Today, the museum complex is a virtual city within a city, with three especially important spaces. The main building contains art from the ancient world to the 19th century, from mummies and papyri to Renaissance art and Rembrandt. European and American art from the 19th-20th centuries fills 26 galleries, broken up by artistic movements and individual artists.

The collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art is a must-see. Finally, there are the private collections, which vary widely from icons and sculptures to Russian Realism and Soviet avant-garde. Each exhibition is specially designed to fit the subject matter.
