The Neue Galerie, an important gallery of German and Austrian art from antiquity through the early 20th century, was founded by two close friends, art dealer Serge Sabarsky and businessman and philanthropist Ronald Lauder (son of Estée Lauder). In the beginning, it was called "Serge" and located on Madison Avenue, but in 1994, it moved to Madison Avenue and started calling itself the "Neue Galerie" (which means "New Gallery").
When Sabarsky died two years later, Lauder continued tending what became a monument to their shared passion for art. Early 20th century Austro-German art is naturally well-represented here by Schiele, Kokoschka, Klimt, Klee, Dix, Kirchner, and others.
FYI: The gallery has two charming cafes — Fledermaus and Sabarsky — decorated with works by acclaimed Viennese designers from the early 20th century. Cabaret shows are held in Sabarsky at night. The Neue Galerie regularly hosts film screenings and lectures. Admission is free every first Friday of the month from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Note: Children under 12 are not admitted, and those age 12 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
