The Morgan Library & Museum, a national historic landmark, is the brainchild of banker John Pierpont "J. P." Morgan (1837-1913). A gifted financier, successful entrepreneur, and generous philanthropist (beneficiaries included the Metropolitan Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, Harvard University, schools, etc.), Morgan also assembled a massive art collection, which in accordance with his will became the core of the Morgan museum, opened to the public in 1924. The Morgan Library & Museum contains a priceless collection of drawings, manuscripts, papyruses, rare books, sheet music, and engravings housed in a historic building complex dating from the early 20th century.

FYI: The Morgan Café offers salads, sandwiches, and desserts prepared just as they would have been a century ago.

Lovers of historic interiors should consider the Morgan Dining Room for brunch or a glass of wine. The Morgan Shop carries an excellent selection of books, albums, films, and music, as well as pricier objects costing upwards of $10,000.
