This six-story building at the intersection of Mercer and Prince streets in SoHo is the first boutique hotel to appear in a former loft space. Lofts achieved popularity in the 1960s, when artists such as Andy Warhol "invaded" SoHo, opening studios in abandoned factories and warehouses. The Mercer preserves the distinct loft design — brick walls, large windows, echos of the building's industrial past, exposed ironworks, wooden floors and very contemporary, minimalist decor.
Thanks to large windows, the hotel's 75 rooms are full of natural light, which makes the spaces feel very roomy. The cozy lobby includes a library and is typical SoHo. Tasteful design in everywhere evident: an old Turkish rug, low office coffee tables, leather banquettes, etc. There's a complimentary gym, but no swimming pool.
The restaurant and bar Mercer Kitchen attracts the beau monde, who stop by on shopping trips on nearby streets. Wear your Dries van Notten jacket or Phillip Lim, or at least know who these designers are. The restaurant serves contemporary French cuisine with Asian influences. Classic New York!
Key info: Wi-Fi is free in the rooms. The hotel is very kid-friendly; you can order a second bed and even hire a nanny there. That being said, there's no kids menu at the restaurant. Also, feel free to bring your favorite pet, but keep in mind that you'll have to pay extra for housekeeping.
Rooms start at $625 per night.
