Union Square Greenmarket
Organic vegetables, fruits, farmstead cheeses and vintage clothing
People from around world know this market and take every opportunity to stroll through its stalls of farm-fresh produce and fragrant flowers. The market opened way back in 1976 with just a few farmers. Now it attracts 140 regional fishermen, bakers, and farmers. Organic vegetables, fruits, farmstead cheeses, artisanal breads, homemade jams, flower venders, wine, ciders …
The market's recycling program accepts textiles, electronics, shoes, and housewares every Saturday. New Yorkers discard 193,000 tons of textiles every year; the program is an attempt to stop this travesty. One man's trash – high-heeled shoes, computers, books, toys, etc. – is another man's treasure, as they say. It's also a boon for those in search of rare objects.
FYI: The market is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Vintage clothing is sold on Mondays and Saturdays only.
