Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
An architectural masterpiece and a multicultural art centre in Marina Bay
This extraordinary art centre is an architectural wonder of Singapore: with its scale and unique design it can only be compared to Sydney Opera House. Amongst locals, - the building is called the ‘durian’ for its strong resemblance of this exotic fruit. Esplanade hosts theatre plays, musicals, contemporary performances, exhibitions and concerts. The concert hall located in one of the semi-spheres of the building is known for one of the best state-of-the-art acoustics in the world. On the second floor you will find the first public library of Singapore with a great selection of art books.
For those who prefers open air events we recommend to visit Open Theatre and concert space The Edge where you can enjoy a show with the sunset sky as a backdrop. There is a wide choice of cafes and restaurants in Esplanade to feed the fervour of the most tempted foodies - from Moroccan cuisine, Indian-style seafood, Australian steak to fresh pastry and coconut ice cream. Most of the shows at the Esplanade- Theatres on the Bay are free of charge, but some concerts and performances require a ticket.
Key info: Esplanade was built on the reclaimed land where back in the 60s there was nothing but the waters of the Singapore Straits. With its unique spikes that is specially designed to keep the heat out and to let the light in, Esplanade is now one of the busiest arts centres in the world.
