about: If you’re fascinated by contemporary art from Asia, and especially Southeast Asia, we highly recommend the Singapore Art Museum. SAM’s collection, housed in a historic mid-19th century building, includes thousands of objects, from paintings and sculptures to the latest multimedia creations.
The museum presents 5-7 exhibitions per year, often in collaboration with art-world giants like the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tokyo’s National Museum of Modern Art, and others. Past exhibitions have featured works by A-listers from Godard to Nauman, and Morimura to Murakami. SAM also regularly hosts the Singapore Biennale. Across the street from the main entrance is SAM at 8Q (i.e. 8 Queen Street), an extension of the museum that’s home to the Moving Image Gallery, which screens video art and documentary films about contemporary art.
Entrance is $10. On Fridays from 6-9 p.m., it’s free.
