The Photographers' Gallery was the first independent photo gallery in Britain when opened in 1971. Originally created as an exhibition space for art photography, the gallery occupied a former tea room before moving to Soho. In 2010, it closed for almost two years for renovation, reopening in a much bigger space, the largest of its kind in London. You can buy photo albums, catalogues, prints, postcards, and even photography equipment in the gallery shop. For a cup of coffee, or to meet some creative friends, check out the cafe. The gallery presents the best of world photography, including works by cult photographers as well as up-and-comers. As a rule, the gallery hosts several exhibitions and special projects simultaneously. Admission is free.

FYI: There's a camera obscura on the third floor that's open Fri.-Sun., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
