The Jack Shainman Gallery was founded in 1984 in Washington, D.C., but soon moved to New York, settling into a space in Chelsea at 513 West 20th Street. Since then, the gallery has added two more New York addresses: one at 524 West 24th Street, and another in the town of Kinderhook. The founders have always had a special knack for finding up-and-coming artists and a unique interest in "exotic" artists from Asia, Africa, and elsewhere.
New exhibitions appear almost every month, and the gallery participates in international shows and art festivals, from Art Basel to documenta. They've also been at the Moscow biennale. Painting, sculpture, photographs, even installations and comics – the range is impressive.
FYI: It's a matter of taste, of course, but actress Hilary Swank turns to Jack Shainman when she wants to add to her art collection.
