This gastronomic restaurant and meeting spot for high society has belonged to the famous Milanese Travaini family since 1957. It has changed location several times since it was first opened as a store for delicacies. Today Il Salumaio is located in one of the most beautiful, oldest buildings in the city: Bagatti Valsecchi. Like many places in Milan, it's hidden out of sight in an easily overlooked archway leading to the inner courtyard of a detached house. Going through, you'll end up in a second, secluded courtyard. The restaurant is there on the right side, to the left there's a simple bistro and a store for delicacies. In the summer, you can sit at the tables here in the fresh air, surrounded by ancient buildings which once belonged to the baron, Bagatti Valsecchi.
We recommend: The signature tuna tar-tar with pineapple slices and pistachios, and the ravioli with spinach and ricotta. For the main course, tagliatelle with seafood and shrimp on the grill with zuchinni. And of course, desert! Summer berries and a light sorbet.
Cuisine: Italian with a modern touch.
Atmosphere: Aristocratic.
The crowd: The Milanese beau monde and high class jetsetters.
Key info: It's the quintessential lunch spot. It's best to book a table beforehand, better in the main hall by the window, and in the summer you should sit in the courtyard.
