New York's Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) occupies an incredible building on Columbus Circle whose facade changes colors depending on the viewing angle. It's a mere taste of the treasures hidden inside. Founded in the mid-20th century, MAD boasts a rich collection of contemporary crafts and design masterpieces, from works by talented handicraftsman to hi-tech marvels. Since education is at the center of the museum's mission, it devotes lots of attention to workshops, seminars, and master classes for art students and enthusiasts alike. You should have no trouble finding inspiration on the museum's four exhibition floors or in the 144-seat auditorium, education center, open art studios, and groundbreaking center for the study of jewelry. (MAD is the only American museum with a gallery dedicated to jewelry art.)
FYI: Critics have named the museum's restaurant, Robert, located on the top floor, one of the best museum restaurants in the city. It features gigantic, wall-to-wall windows and a breathtaking view of Columbus Circle, Central Park, and Broadway. The interior is airy and brightly colored; the cuisine — a mix of American, Italian, and fusion.
