The story of the Betty Cuningham Gallery begins in Chelsea in 1972. Back then, the space was so small that detractors likened it to a bowling alley. And yet that art "ball," rolled down the "alley," hit its mark. The gallery spent 10 years in Chelsea before moving to the Lower East Side in 2014.
"It's a bit like coming home," Betty said. "Riverington Street is basically a continuation of Prince Street, where I had my first gallery. I like the people here, and the area has a very laid-back vibe."
The gallery specializes in late 20th century and early 21st century art. Big names include William Bailey, Nancy Davidson, Charles Garabedian, and Alison Wilding, but everybody else here is fabulous, too.
